The 2018 BMW R 1200 R Sport is a superbly engineered premium roadster, combining iconic BMW boxer-twin character with impressive performance, agile handling and everyday practicality. Powered by a 1,170cc air/liquid-cooled, four-stroke, horizontally opposed two-cylinder boxer engine featuring DOHC and four valves per cylinder, it delivers an exhilarating 125 hp (92 kW) at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Power is transmitted through a six-speed gearbox and shaft final drive, providing smooth, responsive acceleration with the refinement and reliability expected from BMW Motorrad. The rigid tubular-steel bridge frame incorporates the engine as a load-bearing element, complemented by a 45mm upside-down telescopic front fork and BMW EVO Paralever single-sided rear swingarm with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Braking performance comes from twin 320mm front discs with radial four-piston callipers and a 276mm rear disc with a two-piston calliper, supported by BMW Motorrad ABS and Automatic Stability Control (ASC). The standard Rain and Road riding modes adapt the motorcycle's response to changing conditions, while the Sport specification's factory equipment and styling distinguish it from the standard model; depending on the original market configuration, this can include Riding Modes Pro, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), a sport windscreen, engine spoiler, LED indicators and the striking Light White finish with contrasting red frame. Gear Shift Assistant Pro, where factory-fitted, allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts for a more engaging ride. Additional available equipment includes Dynamic ESA electronic suspension adjustment, heated grips, cruise control, Keyless Ride, tyre-pressure monitoring and an onboard computer, depending on the individual motorcycle's specification. Rolling on lightweight 17-inch cast-alloy wheels with a 120/70 ZR17 front tyre and 180/55 ZR17 rear tyre, the R 1200 R Sport combines confident cornering with an upright, commanding riding position. With a wheelbase of 1,515mm, a seat height of approximately 790mm, an 18-litre fuel tank and a fully fuelled road-ready weight of around 231kg, it offers an outstanding balance of performance, comfort and versatility. Finished with BMW's distinctive roadster styling, premium engineering and a purposeful sporting presence, the 2018 R 1200 R Sport is an accomplished all-round motorcycle equally suited to spirited country-road riding, daily commuting and longer-distance touring.
